The Real Meaning Behind "Work Hard, Play Hard"

To be professionally successful is a common goal amongst today’s modern woman, and in this generation, more women than ever before are joining the work force, determined to work their way to success. But have your ever thought about orgasming your way to success?

A new study conducted by Oregon State University actually found that people who orgasm at least once a day are far more likely to be happy with their jobs and progress faster up the corporate ladder.

The recent study analysed 159 married people over the course of two weeks by asking candidates to fill in two questionnaires about their mood. The research found that in both men and women subjects, productivity increased at work if they had sex the night prior.

“Maintaining a healthy relationship that includes a healthy sex life will help employees stay happy and engaged in their work, which benefits the employees and the organizations they work for” said Professor Keith Leavitt, an associate professor at the University’s College of Business and specialises in organisational behaviour and management.

The research further reinforces the commonly accepted phenomenon that sex releases the chemical dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is a chemical that mediates pleasure in the brain, and at adequate levels also helps in focus and attention.  Interestingly, dopamine is also the molecule that drives our desires and secret cravings; from love, lust, motivation, feminism all the way through to addiction. A pretty powerful chemical if channelled through to the right focal areas in your life.

Sex also releases oxytocin (also known as the “love hormone”) a powerful hormone that acts as a neurotransmitter in the brain. The oxytocin hormone plays a major role in creating and maintaining bonds between two people. Another study actually showed that men in relationships who were given a boost of oxytocin spray stood further away from an attractive woman than men who did not receive the spray. So having more sex with your man helps to keep predators at bay multiple levels.

The interesting discovery of the study conducted by the Oregon State University was that the effect of dopamine and oxytocin from sex continues to last for at least 24 hours, well into the next day, creating a happier mood all round.

The more positive mood in turn resulted in higher job engagement and satisfaction. The survey adjusted for other factors which may be correlated to the group having more sex (e.g. marital satisfaction and quality of sleep).

“This is a reminder that sex has social, emotional and physiological benefits, and it's important to make it a priority,” Professor Leavitt said. “Just make time for it. Making a more intentional effort to maintain a healthy sex life should be considered an issue of human sustainability, and as a result, a potential career advantage”.

The results of this survey do not seem to surprise the Swedes. Earlier in February, one Swedish official, Per-Erik Muskos, a council member for Övertorneå, proposed a motion for his town to have a paid, hour-long break from work each week to have sex. I’m assuming he did the math and figured out that he would make that hour back through the increased productivity in his workforce; a win-win all round.

So next time you contemplate passing on sex because its been a long hard day at the office and you could do with those extra winks, consider the bigger benefits that you will likely reap instead.

Happy Orgasming.
